Someone who transfers or launders illegally obtained money on behalf of criminals so it’s harder to trace.

Money mules don't always know what they're doing. Criminals often recruit for money mules through fake job ads, making people believe they’re doing legitimate work.

Recent trends

Digital platforms have made it much easier for fraudsters to recruit money mules. Younger adults are frequently targeted on social media, gaming platforms, and other sites with the promise of easy money. What's more, criminals are looking for individuals in tough financial situations who are especially vulnerable. Many don't realize that acting as a money mule, even unknowingly, can lead to criminal charges or damaged credit.
