Spoofing
A cyberattack where criminals disguise themselves as a trusted source—like an email, phone number, or website—to trick victims into sharing information.

Spoofing is often the first step in a phishing scam, helping to make fake messages look real.
Recent trends
Spoofing tools are now cheap and widely available, allowing attackers to spend little and leave almost no trace. Caller ID spoofing has been so widely abused by scammers that the U.S. passed the Truth in Caller ID Act in 2009 to fight it. At the same time, email spoofing is leveraging AI to mimic the writing styles of trusted companies or agencies, while spoofed social media profiles are being used to spread misinformation.
